The Power of Podcasting and Storytelling: Grow Your Business and Connect With Your Audience

What if the story you have been scared to share could help someone feel less alone, build trust with a potential client, or open the door to a new business or speaking opportunity?

I’ve said it multiple times - podcasting is more than creating content. It’s storytelling, it’s connecting with your audience, it’s creating opportunities for yourself - without having to wait for someone to invite you to share your story.

Share your story on your platform first, and then the opportunities to share it on bigger stages follow.

This is exactly what happened to me after I started podcasting. I’ve been invited to speak, not just on podcasting, but to share my story - why I started a podcast and what I’ve learned along the way. And now, I am encouraging you to share yours on your own platform.

The Power of Podcasting for Online Entrepreneurs

Podcasting is one of the best ways to grow your business and build your personal brand because the content is evergreen. And since the content is evergreen, people can find your episodes for years to come.

For example, two online friends who recently paused their podcasts shared that they are still getting downloads! Although they aren't actively recording, producing, or promoting their podcast.

One of them said they haven’t released an episode in months, and last month she got over 300 downloads. The other one said she received over 75 downloads in the past week! Again, no promotion, no new episode released. That is the power of podcasting!

Because when you create content that aligns with your audience and answers their questions, they will find your show and listen!

Your Podcast Can Work for You Long After You Publish

Your episodes do the heavy lifting for you continuously! As long as you’ve established your systems and Podcast SEO - your episodes will guide your audience to your website, social media, email list, etc.

Discoverability for your podcast is what helps your audience find your show! And great content and storytelling are what help convert them. Even if it’s been a while since you’ve published an episode.

You are Building More Than an Audience

With your podcast, you are building a digital asset and a business. And in the long-run it will create opportunities for you. For example:

  • Speaking engagements

  • Digital Marketing sales

  • Recognizable personal brand

  • Sponsorships

  • Brand Deals

Stop thinking about your podcast as content creation and start strategizing it like a business!

Storytelling Helps You Build Meaningful Connections

When I started my first podcast, The American Dream in the Eyes of Immigrants the maingoal was storytelling. It was sharing immigrant’s stories about their journey moving to the United States. And almost five years later, it’s grown into a movement, a community, and a business.

I’ve been invited to speak on the storytelling aspect of immigration. I’ve been invited to speak about some of my guests’ stories and use their experiences. I’ve had listeners reach out from different countries and tell me how connected they felt to my podcast because their stories were similar when they moved to a different country. And not necessarily the United States because the immigration experience is the same no matter where they are. That is how storytelling connects us.

You don’t have share your story in order to sell something - you can share your story simply to connect with others.

No Need to Choose Between Purpose and Profit

Your podcast can serve multiple purposes at once and it should. You share your expertise, tell your story, educate your audience, share client testimonials, and then promote your services. This is why podcasting is so powerful. Storytelling is what moves people! Every single one of my clients have mentioned that they felt connected to me in some way, which is why they’ve chosen to work with me.

Let’s talk about the core three principles of podcasting:

  • Lead with authenticity: By sharing experiences and insights that reflect who you are. Provide a deeper understanding of why you are who you are and why you think the way you do.

  • Be intentional: You can connect your content to your larger mission and business goals.

  • Serve your audience: create episodes that are educational, entertaining, and encouraging.

As your podcast grows, more opportunities will present themselves, like sponsorships, speaking engagements, media features, and more.

Start Sharing Your Story Through Podcasting In These Simple Steps

  1. Identify Your Purpose: Why do you want to start a podcast? Who do you want to reach?

  2. Choose Your Message: What expertise and experiences

  3. Plan Your Content: Research keywords, what your audience is asking on Google, and create content around that.

  4. Start Before You’re Ready: Feeling ready will come after you press record! Confidence comes from doing the thing!

Once you have a clear vision, start recording your podcast, and repeat the steps; it will feel less overwhelming.

Your Voice and Story Have a Purpose.

Podcasting provides the platform, and storytelling gives it purpose. If you’ve had the desire in your heart to start your podcast, I firmly believe it’s there for a reason!

God wants to use the medium of podcasting to bring your story to those who need to hear it and the best thing to do is to be obedient to the calling.
