What’s Really Holding You Back From Starting a Podcast? (It’s Probably Not What You Think)
You’ve been thinking about starting a podcast for months… maybe even years. (Completely normal BTW).
You keep telling yourself:
“I need more time.”
“I need better equipment.”
“I need more confidence.”
“I need to do more research.”
But what if the thing holding you back from launching your podcast isn’t actually any of those things?
That’s exactly what I want to talk to you about today! Because after helping women launch podcasts, doing podcast SEO audits, and coaching aspiring podcasters through the process, I’ve realized something important:
Most people do not need more information to start a podcast. They need clarity.
And sometimes, they need someone to help them uncover what’s really keeping them stuck.
Why So Many Aspiring Podcasters Never Launch
One of the biggest things I see is people staying stuck in “research mode.”
They consume endless content:
YouTube videos
Podcast tutorials
Equipment recommendations
Social media tips
Editing hacks
But they never actually hit record.
I even had a client go through my entire 6-week coaching program. We recorded and published her trailer episode, but when it came time to launch her first official episode, she froze.
At first, I felt terrible.
But then I realized it wasn’t about the podcast itself. There was something deeper going on emotionally that was stopping her from moving forward.
That experience inspired me to create a quiz to help aspiring podcasters figure out what is truly holding them back from launching.
Because once you identify the real block, you can finally move forward.
Fear of Judgment Is Stopping More People Than Technology Ever Will
One of the most common reasons people avoid starting a podcast is fear of judgment.
You worry about:
What will your family think
What your friends will say
Sounding awkward
Putting yourself online
Being criticized
But here’s what I want you to remember:
You do not need everyone to understand your vision in order to begin.
If God placed the idea for a podcast on your heart, that wasn’t a group project. It wasn’t a conference call. It was between you and Him.
Your assignment is not to wait for permission.Your assignment is to be faithful and start!
How to Build Confidence Before Launching
One thing I recommend to my clients is practicing privately first.
Record:
1–3 practice episodes
A trailer episode
Voice memo brainstorms
You don’t even have to publish them immediately.
The goal is to get comfortable hearing yourself speak and learning your flow.
Because confidence does not come before action.Confidence comes from action.
Perfectionism Is Keeping You Stuck
A lot of people think they need:
The perfect microphone
The perfect branding
The perfect intro
The perfect website
The perfect strategy
Before they can start.
But perfectionism is often just fear dressed up as productivity.
Here’s the truth:
Your first podcast episode is supposed to be your worst episode.
When I started my immigration podcast, The American Dream in The Eyes of Immigrants, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.
I recorded on my phone.
If you listen to my first episode now, it’s honestly hilarious. My cousin and I kept asking each other: “Can you hear me?” “No, can you hear me?”
I almost deleted the episode.
But while editing it, I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes, and I realized something important:
That messy beginning was part of the story.
Now I use it as motivation to show aspiring podcasters that nobody starts out polished.
You Can Start a Podcast With Your Phone
Let me save you hundreds of dollars right now:
You do not need expensive equipment to start a podcast.
I currently have clients launching podcasts using:
Their phones
External microphones
One recording app (Riverside - FOR FREE!)
That’s it.
You can literally:
Record on your phone
Edit from your phone
Host your podcast from your phone
Podcasting does not have to be complicated. (STOP OVERCOMPLICATING IT!)
And despite what social media may tell you, you do not need video to start a podcast either. (This is my podcasting hot take)
Podcasting is still an audio-first platform.
People are listening while:
Driving
Cleaning
Working out
Walking
Cooking
The data is still showing that audio podcasting is incredibly powerful.
Lack of Clarity Can Keep You From Taking Action
Sometimes people don’t start because they genuinely don’t know:
What to talk about
Who the podcast is for
How often to publish
What format to use
And honestly? That’s valid.
But clarity comes through movement.
You do not need a five-year podcast plan before you launch.
You just need enough clarity to start Season 1.
That’s why I created my V.O.I.C.E. Method — to help aspiring podcasters:
Clarify their message
Identify their audience
Build a podcast strategy
Create sustainable content
Launch with confidence
The more action you take, the clearer everything becomes.
Plus, you won’t be doing this alone. I am here to help you every step of the way!
You Don’t Need to Podcast Weekly to Be Successful
This is something I wish more people understood.
A successful podcast does not have to be weekly.
You can podcast:
Weekly
Bi-weekly
Monthly
In seasons
The best podcast schedule is the one you can realistically maintain.
Right now, I host three podcasts while working a corporate job:
The American Dream in The Eyes of Immigrants
Podcasting for Latina CEOs
Life of De La Cruzes with my husband
And each one has a different publishing schedule.
Why?
Because sustainability matters more than frequency.
Consistency doesn’t mean copying someone else’s workflow. It means creating a system that works for your life.
Podcasting Is One of the Best Evergreen Marketing Tools
One reason I love podcasting so much is that it creates evergreen content.
One podcast episode can become:
A blog post
Instagram captions
Email newsletters
Pinterest content
YouTube clips
Threads posts
LinkedIn posts
Instead of constantly creating content from scratch, your podcast becomes the foundation for your entire content strategy.
That’s why I believe podcasting is one of the most powerful long-term marketing tools for entrepreneurs.
Podcast SEO Actually Works
I recently did an SEO audit for another podcaster named Heidy, and within days, she started ranking for her target keywords on podcast platforms.
She saw:
Increased downloads
Better discoverability
More traffic from Spotify search
Podcast SEO matters.
Optimizing:
Episode titles
Show notes
Keywords
Descriptions
Can help new listeners discover your content organically.
And unlike social media posts that disappear after 24 hours, podcast episodes continue working for you long after they’re published.
Your Audience Doesn’t Want Perfect — They Want You
Here’s the thing most aspiring podcasters forget:
People don’t connect with perfection. Because perfection doesn’t exist. They connect with authenticity.
They want:
Your story
Your perspective
Your personality
Your experiences
Your voice
Someone out there needs to hear your message from you specifically.
And the longer you wait to feel ready, the longer your future listeners have to wait to hear your voice.
Ready to Start Your Podcast?
If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin, the first step is identifying what’s truly holding you back. (Take the quiz)
Because once you understand the block, you can finally move forward with clarity and confidence.
And remember:You do not have to figure this out alone. I am here!
Final Thoughts
Starting a podcast can feel intimidating at first, but every successful podcaster started exactly where you are right now:
Nervous
Unsure
Overthinking
Learning as they went
The difference is that they started anyway.
Your voice matters.Your story matters. And your podcast could be exactly what someone else needs to hear.
So start messy. Start scared. Start with your phone if you have to.
Just start.
